9 Foods you can Eat with Braces

bracesDoes your child have braces? Are you struggling to provide him or her with healthy and nutritious meals as a result? If that is the case, keep reading to learn how to keep your child’s body healthy and make mealtimes fun again while their teeth are undergoing the necessary orthodontics treatment!

From about the age of six, your child will have all of their permanent teeth, which means that if any misalignment or bite issue develops, he or she will be old enough for braces. It also means that they will be unable to get proper sustenance from a steady diet of yogurt and applesauce for the duration of the treatment.

While you must keep crunchy, sticky, hard and chewy foods* away from your child – such as popcorn, nuts, chips, candy, gum, etc. – there are many things that he or she can eat without any problems. All you need is an extra 5 minutes in the kitchen when preparing your child’s meals and snacks. Foods that can be eaten with braces include:

  1. Fruits – cut into thin, bite-sized slices
    1. baked apples
    2. strawberry-rhubarb applesauce
  2. Vegetables – cut into bite-sized slices or steamed until soft
    1. mashed potatoes
  3. Dairy – soft cheeses, smoothies, cottage cheese
  4. Meat and fish – shredded chicken or turkey, thinly sliced cold cuts, tuna, salmon
  5. Soft breads – muffins, pancakes, soft tortillas
  6. Grains – pasta, quinoa, soft-cooked rice, couscous, oatmeal
  7. Other – hard-boiled eggs, omelettes, soups, chili
  8. Desserts – pudding, ice cream or frozen yogurt
  9. Drinks – fresh water, anything non-sugary and non-acidic°

This list of varied and healthy meals will help you see your child’s beautiful and happy smile, even before the braces are off!
