We Love Our Moms

WHEN I THINK ABOUT WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A MOM, I automatically want to get a cup of coffee, car lines, diaper changes, volunteering at schools, working, bathing, feeding, brushing teeth, being a counselor, being a cheerleader, feeling heartbroken, the intense amount of happiness that surges through your body when you see your baby succeed in something he/she has been working on, sports events, graduations…the list goes on and on. Sometimes, I get so caught up in making sure my check list gets completed before I go to bed that I forget to stop and soak it all in. Being a Mom is the most incredible thing I have ever done and the unconditional love I get in return is amazing!

I’m a history buff and decided I needed to know when Mother’s Day became an official holiday. In 1908 Anna Jarvis got financial backing from John Wanamaker (a local department store owner in Philadelphia) and created a celebration to honor all the sacrifices Mother’s made for their children in West Virginia. That same day, thousands of people went to one of Wanamaker’s department stores in Philadelphia. From there, the idea spread across the United States and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson signed off on making Mother’s Day an official holiday in the U.S. If you look back in history, we have been celebrating mothers since the beginning of time, ancient Greeks and Romans had special days dedicated to celebrating their Mothers. Even though the world doesn’t recognize the second Sunday in May as being Mother’s Day, the world recognizes how much we need our Moms.

This Sunday, sit back and relax. Take time to look at your beautiful children and be proud of who they are. Reflect on your Mom, Step Mom, Adoptive Mom, Grandma, God Mother, Aunt or any other woman who had a role in making you YOU! Good Job MOM!

“All that I am or ever hope to be,
I owe to my angel Mother.”

– Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865)
