Emergency Dental Care

Pediatric Emergency Dental Care in Johns Creek GAWhen a dental emergency happens to your child, you must be able to help him or her immediately and visit a specialized children’s dentist promptly afterwards. If you live anywhere in Johns Creek, GA, and are seeking a pediatric dentist who offers emergency dental care, look no further than Children’s Dental Zone.

The following are some of the remedies that you can implement when there is an unexpected problem with your child’s teeth or any other part of their mouth:

Toothaches

Your child might get a toothache for a variety of reasons, including a cavity, a nerve infection, a loose baby tooth, something stuck between their teeth, a canker sore, or potential trauma. If he or she complains of tooth pain, rinse their mouth with warm water to ensure that nothing is stuck between their teeth. You may give your child children’s pain medication for temporary relief, but do not place aspirin on the affected area – it could burn the gums. If pain persists or swelling occurs, apply a cold compress to your child’s face and contact us as soon as possible.

Knocked-out Tooth

If your child’s permanent tooth is knocked out, we recommend finding it if possible. Making sure to handle it only by the crown and not the root, clean it with warm water without applying any excess pressure. If your child is old enough, reinsert the tooth back into its socket, place a piece of gauze over it, and have him or her bite down on it. Otherwise, place the tooth in a cup of milk. Visit the dentist immediately to increase chances of saving the tooth and having it permanently reinstalled in the child’s mouth.

If a baby tooth is knocked out, it is not reinstalled in order to avoid damage to the unerupted permanent tooth. However, we recommend visiting us for an examination to make sure no tooth fragments are left in the child’s gum tissue.

Chipped or Fractured Tooth

If your child’s tooth – whether the permanent or baby tooth – is chipped or fractured, rinse his or her mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the affected area to prevent swelling. If possible, find the fragments and place them in a cup of milk, and take them with you to see your dentist. Immediate dental care is important to reduce the risk of infection or serious dental issues.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip, or Cheek

If your child cuts or bites his or her tongue, lip or cheek, apply ice on the area to prevent swelling. To stop bleeding, apply firm but gentle pressure on the area with a clean cloth or gauze. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes, take your child to our office or an emergency room immediately.

Broken or Damaged Braces

If your child’s braces are broken or damaged, only remove them if possible to do so without causing discomfort or pain. Cover any lose edges with gauze or cotton balls – particularly if the wire is lodged in the child’s gums, cheeks or tongue – and see us immediately.

Fractured or Broken Jaw

If your child injures his or her jaw, tie the mouth closed with a towel or a handkerchief to prevent movement and take them to an emergency room as soon as possible.

Serious Head Injury

In the case of a serious head injury, take your child to the emergency room immediately!
