9 Foods you can Eat with Braces
By Danny King

Does your child have braces? Are you struggling to provide him or her with healthy and nutritious meals as a result? If that is the case, keep reading to learn how to keep your child’s body healthy and make mealtimes fun again while their teeth are undergoing the necessary orthodontics treatment!
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed as a parent when it comes to getting your child the foods they need and that won’t cause pain in the process.
Having all of the extra equipment in your mouth already feels bulky. And when your child’s braces have been adjusted, the level of soreness can really affect their ability to chew or put any pressure on their teeth.
From about the age of six, your child will have all of their permanent teeth, which means that if any misalignment or bite issue develops, he or she will be old enough for braces. This also means that they will be unable to get proper sustenance from a steady diet of yogurt, applesauce, and milkshakes for the duration of the treatment.
While you must keep crunchy, sticky, hard, and chewy foods* away from your child – such as popcorn, nuts, chips, candy, gum, etc. – there are many things that he or she can eat without any problems. All you need is an extra five minutes in the kitchen when preparing your child’s meals and snacks.
What foods can you eat while wearing braces?
Foods that can be eaten with braces include:
- Fruits – Make sure that these are cut into thin, bite-sized slices. Great fruits to include are baked apples and strawberry-rhubarb applesauce. Sprinkle a little bit of cinnamon on top of either of these options to add some extra flavor.
- Vegetables – These will need to be cut into bite-sized slices or steamed until soft. Vegetables such as mashed potatoes, mashed cauliflower, and sweet potatoes will be gentle on their teeth, but packed with nutrients.
- Dairy – Any type of soft cheeses, smoothies, cottage cheese, and even the occasional milkshake will be an easy addition to their diet that won’t hurt because there really is no chewing involved! As your child what some of their favorite smoothies are and have fun together making them at home!
- Meat and fish – Take care with meat. Meat can easily get stuck or lodged in braces or teeth, but if you make sure that chicken or turkey is shredded, you’ll be in good shape. You can also try to incorporate thinly sliced cold cuts, tuna, or salmon.
- Soft breads – Softs breads can really be comforting. You can add vanilla or chocolate protein powder into muffins and pancakes for an added boost and source of energy. You child may also find that soft tortillas are a great option that won’t cause any issues!
- Grains – Another wonderful option! Try pasta, quinoa, soft-cooked rice, couscous, oatmeal. Add in some of those yummy vegetable options to get those nutrients!
- Other – Spice up the menu by adding some hard-boiled eggs, whipping up some omelettes, or pulling together some great soups or chili.
- Desserts – The fun stuff that your child won’t fight you on! Keep pudding, ice cream or frozen yogurt on hand. Remember – it’s okay for your child to have dessert every now and then.
- Drinks – Make sure hydration stays front and center! Have your kid carry a bottle of fresh water with them to sip on throughout the day and feel free to also incorporate anything non-sugary and non-acidic°
This list of varied and healthy meals will help you see your child’s beautiful and happy smile, even before the braces are off!
Remember – nothing lasts forever! This is a season. You can keep this list in your bag or as a note in your phone so that when you’re out at the grocery store, you can refer back to this cheat-sheet and get your child some options that will nourish, but that won’t hurt!
